Day 3 in Rome, Italy

My mother and I awoke Sunday morning fairly early and enjoyed some Italian breakfast at our Airbnb before heading to our first stop of the day: the Vatican. Upon our arrival we were surprised by the immense quantity of people filling the main area! Apparently a lot of the locals go to the Vatican on Sunday mornings.

Our plan had been to visit St. Peters Basilica in the morning but the guards informed us that it wouldn’t be open until the afternoon because of the large gathering happening. We decided to walk around the area to pass the time. We walked to the bridge of Vittorio Emanuele II and saw the outside of Castel San Angel.

We crossed the bridge and began walking around the neighborhood of Campo de’ Fiori and ran into some beautiful sights.

We also made our way to the Piazza Navona and saw the fountain of the four rivers.

And stopped for some gelato before walking by the Pantheon.

A funny story is that mom and I sat down to eat the gelato and once we were done I said to her “We need to find the garbagio (which isn’t a word but I say it sometimes to mean garbage” and an Italian man passed by us and turned to me and said “buongiorno” which means good day!

We made our way to a local coffee shop for a quick drink and some wifi. Interestingly enough, Italians don’t write their letters and numbers the same way as we do in the U.S. I had quite a bit of trouble getting the wifi but a girl sitting next to us helped me out! She had been living in Italy for a few months and gave us a long list of recommended places to eat and suggested a restaurant for lunch.

After our walking around we were pretty hungry and we decided to eat lunch at Emma, a restaurant that the girl had recommended to us. Man was it amazing! I had fresh pizza and my mom got cooked vegetables and bruschetta.

After lunch we walked back to the Vatican and waited in line for about an hour to get into St. Peters Basilica. While waiting in line I had a nice chat with the women next to us in Spanish because they were from Barcelona.

The basilica is huge and decorated so beautifully. You could spend hours in there just gazing upon it.

After our busy day we returned back to the pizza café by our house that we visited our first day in Rome for some more pizza and fizzy water.

Worry less and smile more.
